The Government Of India
(mainly The Indian defense ministry) is going to deploy “NETRA” (NEtwork TRaffic Analysis), an
upgraded internet surveillance system very soon.
According to sources
internet surveillance system that is NETRA, it will be capable of detecting
words like ‘attack’, ‘bomb’, ‘blast’ or ‘kill’ from reams of tweets, status
updates, emails, instant messaging transcripts, internet calls, blogs and
forums. The system will have the capability of capturing any dubious voice
traffic passing through software such as Skype or
Google Talk. Three security agencies, which include the IB and RAW, have each been allotted a maximum of 300 GB for storing intercepted internet traffic, and an extra 100 GB is assigned to the remaining law enforcement agencies.

Note from the telecom
department stated that, “Intelligence
Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat are currently testing ‘Netra’, which will be
deployed by all national security agencies.” Further to it the note said, “The specifications of the ‘Netra’ system can
be taken as frozen following tests by the Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat,
and can be considered for providing multiple user access to security agencies.”
NETRA (NEtwork TRaffic Analysis) is a
software network developed by India's Centre
for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
(CAIR), a Defense Research and
Development Organization (DRDO) laboratory, and is used by the Intelligence
Bureau, India's domestic intelligence agency and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the country's external intelligence agency to intercept and
analyze internet traffic using pre-defined filters.
